How to Paint Trees
By Mike Fong
TIP: Nature is very random. Every tree/branch/leaf/seed is unique.
Drawing clouds is a great way to study random shapes. Look at the outline in particular. Try it for yourself and use the shapes when drawing trees and foliage. INSPIRATION: This study was inspired by Kazuo Oga (Studio Ghibli background artist.) |
REMEMBER: Trees are not just big balls of leaves. The leaves only grow towards the end of the branches. Leaves in the middle of a tree wouldn't receive any light. Also remember that trees are not solid blocks of color. There are some gaps where you can see through to the other side.
Extra Tips: - Keep it simple. - Keep small highlights to a minimum. - Spread the light. - Don't forget about reflective light. To paint a tree is to understand a tree. GO look at trees. |
